Sonja obtained a B.ECON. degree from the University of Stellenbosch and a LL.B. degree from the University of South Africa. She completed her articles of clerkship at a Cape Town based law firm and together with Hein von Lieres and Christine Cooper established von Lieres Cooper & Barlow in August 2002.
